Legislation Approved to Study Light Rail Expansion

While few bills survived the Virginia General Assembly’s Special Session on transportation, a bill to study the expansion of light rail in Hampton Roads passed nearly unanimously. On July 9, 2008, HB 6028—introduced by Virginia Beach legislators Delegate Bob Tata and Senator Frank Wagner—passed the House by a vote of 93-0 and the Senate by a vote of 33-1. Under the bill, HRT is required to begin study of expansion options, including extension to the Virginia Beach oceanfront, and the feasibility of development through public private partnership as well as the traditional federal approval process for rail transit projects.

As reported in a local newspaper, Tata said he envisions the rail running all the way to the Virginia Beach Convention Center. He said it would offer a hassle-free commute to those who live in Virginia Beach and work in downtown Norfolk.

Michael Townes, HRT president, said he was encouraged by the bill. “We thank Delegate Tata and Senator Wagner for their leadership on this issue. The entire General Assembly should be applauded for their recognition of the value of expanding light rail in Hampton Roads. While we remain focused on construction of the starter line in Norfolk, this is certainly a step in the right direction in terms of system growth. We look forward to examining all logical extensions.”
